GIVE US A KING! Print E-mail

“And [Samuel] said, ‘This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons… He will take your daughters…And, he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants…And you will be his servants. And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the L-rd will not hear you in that day.’” (Excerpts from 1 Samuel 8:11-18)

In spite of the fact that Samuel warned them, the people said, “No, but we will have a king over us…” The people wanted CHANGE from the constant assaults of their enemies. So, G-d chose out of all Israel, a man with outward beauty, but no integrity or character because they had asked for a king and rejected the G-d-chosen, G-d-fearing Samuel from ruling over them. G-d told Samuel that in rejecting him, they had rejected G-d, Himself. The Bible describes Saul (Israel’s first king) as a choice and handsome son. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people. (Saul’s name means, “asked for”.)

Although Saul was ‘chosen’ to be king, his own sense of his role was vague and thus he lacked direction for the ‘job’. Although he knew Samuel had already anointed him to be king, when it was time to ‘present’ him to the people, they found him hiding among the supplies. There is no sign of any real ‘spirituality’ in Saul except that he prophesied with the prophets to whom he was sent by Samuel and ‘changed’ into a different man. It makes one wonder what he was like BEFORE G-d ‘changed’ him because even after becoming king, his life was punctuated by disobedience and self-will. His declarations were permeated with “I [did this]…” indicating that he believed that he was responsible for Israel’s successes rather than G-d.

Saul’s 33-year reign resulted in disaster and defeat for the people of Israel among their enemies even when they called upon G-d to come to their aid. Remember, G-d said that He would not hear them when they cried out to Him after having demanded a king. Saul’s evil ways finally brought an end to his kingship.

In the same way that the people of Samuel’s day demanded a king for themselves, people in America cried out for a leader who would bring CHANGE and free them from the ‘heavy’ burdens of their lives. They found one who spoke with charisma and promised the vague, elusive ‘change’ they sought. Few people, including the news media, examined carefully what those indefinable changes would be. Even though the one they sought lacked character and integrity, the people said, “No but we will have this king”.

Like Samuel, we can now outline the results of what this ‘king’ promised so charismatically:

He raised taxes for all classes of people and businesses; he has increased the deficit exponentiallly; unemployment has remained high; he appointed judges that insured the continuance of abortion and approved same sex marriages; he reinstated partial-birth abortion in the Democratic platform promising to make it the law of the land; he removed our troops from Iraq in total defeat; he is reducing the size of the U.S. Military forces and removed the American missiles protecting Western Europe; he negotiates with terrorist nations that hate us; he has instituted socialized medicine in America fully knowing that it has failed miserably in other countries; he allows illegal immigration to continue, with the knowledge that terrorists have been able to infiltrate our borders; he continues to allow even illegals who are criminals to remain in the U.S. He has snubbed the Prime Minister of Israel and invites Muslim radicals to the White House. He has divided our Nation by fostering class warfare and sowing discord among the peoples.

This is what the L-rd has to say about some of these issues:

“These six things the L-rd hates, yes seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19)

And for those who support the one who approves of the things that are an abomination to the L-rd, the L-rd says:

“So I will not look on them with pity or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done." (Ezekiel 9:10)

While our charismatic president professes to be Christian and is seeking re-election and the endorsement of Evangelicals, G-d denounces even those that approve of such ungodly behavior stating that if one approves of the behavior (such as shedding innocent blood, a/k/a abortion), they are as guilty of the sin as if they themselves had committed it. The Message Bible puts it this way.

“And it's not as if they don't know better. They know perfectly well they're spitting in G-d's face. And they don't care—worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best! (Romans 1:32)

There is a story that is relevant to the last presidential election: A couple decided to trade in their old reliable car to buy a new minivan that would meet the needs of their growing family. After much consideration, they made the purchase and took good care of it just as they had their old car. However, after only 10,000 miles, a very major part broke. Then, on the way home from a picnic, hailstones pelted the newly fixed van and then someone slammed into the back of their car. Having expected great performance from this automobile, they instead were faced with disastrous consequences.

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 16:25)
