The 'Pale' Green Horse Print E-mail
Written by Victoria Radin

“Again I looked, and there appeared a horse sickly green in color. The name of its rider was death, and the grave followed close behind him. A quarter of the earth was put into their power, to kill with the sword, by famine, by violence, and through the wild beasts of the earth.” (Revelation 6:8 -Phillips)

Chapter six of the Book of Revelation describes the beginning of the time called the Tribulation, the releasing of the “seven seals of the scroll” (Revelation 5:1). Releasing the first seal [white horse] introduces a conqueror with a bow. The release of the second seal [red horse] announces wars upon the earth. The opening of the third seal [black horse] brings famine and scarcity to the world. Unlocking the fourth seal [green horse] identifies the perpetrator of widespread death throughout the world.

Only a few versions of the Bible translate the color of this fourth horse as ‘green’ in color although Strong’s #5515 translates the Greek word as “greenish”. Instead it is often translated “pale”. The color green, though, is what hints at the identity of the ‘rider’ that brings death by sword, famine, and violence. The ‘green horse’ is the color of the National Flag of the Arab League. And, it should be noted that one quarter of the population of the earth is Muslim, which explains why a quarter of the earth will be ‘put into their power’.

The Arabic writing on the 22-nation green Arab League flag is the Islamic statement of faith, the emblem of Islam, enclosed within two olive branches. Their belief is that there will be peace when their god, Allah, rules the world. Green is the traditional color of Islam.

Arab League

The ideology of radical Islamists aims to establish a “caliphate”, a state ruled by a single political and religious leader according to Islamic law, or Sharia. They seek to bring into submission all non-Muslims and destroy those who will not convert. These Islamists have a particular hatred for Jews and Christians due to their loyalty to the one true God, Yahweh. They also doggedly pursue the destruction of Israel, since that is the place from which Yeshua [Jesus] will rule and reign in the earth.

Ezekiel 38 lists the nations that God will draw to Israel in order to bring judgment upon them. These nations have flags that are combinations of the colors of the four horses of the apocalypse (i.e. white, red, black, and green) and are all majority Muslim nations except for Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal [i.e. Russia]. Russia will be ‘a guard’ for the invading army from the north. They will guard the army against interference by other nations of the world.

“… Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal…Prepare yourself and be ready… and be a guard for them.” (Ezekiel 38:1-7)

Ezekiel records God’s plan to use this army to execute judgment on His people for their rebellion against Him. Then, when the Lord has sufficiently chastised them, He will bring judgment on the invading “Northern Army”.

“Thus says the Lord God: ‘On that day when My people Israel dwell safely …you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, … a mighty army. You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land….’” (Ezekiel 38:14-16)

“And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel… that My fury will show in My face…I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains…Every man’s sword will be against his brother. And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed… flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.” (Ezekiel 38:18, 21-22)

The prophet Joel also describes this event. In Joel’s account, the Lord’s army is depicted as locusts, for the utter destruction they inflict upon a land. It is described as different types of locusts, since this army will comprise many nations, as is listed in Ezekiel 38.

Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty. (Joel 2:15)

“What the gnawing locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; and what the swarming locust has left, the creeping locust has eaten; and what the creeping locust has left, the stripping locust has eaten…For a nation has invaded My land, mighty and without number…” (Joel 1:4-6)

“Then the Lord … will have pity on His people…I will remove the northern army far from you, and I will drive it into a parched and desolate land…Then I will make up to you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the creeping locust, the stripping locust and the gnawing locust, My great army which I sent among you.” (Joel 2:18, 20, 25)

It may appear that the “green horse” of Islam is gaining a foothold throughout the world, especially in Europe, but God’s word assures us that it is only for a season. This Northern Army will suffer a great defeat after which God will restore the nation of Israel.

“For the Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, even though devastators have devastated them and destroyed their vine branches.” (Nahum 2:2)

“And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem. When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning…” (Isaiah 4:3-4)

Once radical Islamists are defeated, the bottomless pit will be opened (Revelation 9) signaling the time for the release of the LOCUSTS and “the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, so that they would kill a third of mankind. The number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million.” These ‘trumpet judgments’ will bring nuclear and biological warfare, resulting in the death of one-third of mankind and utter destruction of the earth [Isaiah 28:22]. Isaiah’s vision of this is terrifying.

“Fear and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth…for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth are shaken. The earth is violently broken, the earth is split open, the earth is shaken exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall totter like a hut…It shall come to pass in that day that the Lord will punish on high the host of exalted ones [fallen angels of 2 Peter 2:4], and on the earth the kings of the earth. They will be gathered together [the 200 million-man army], as prisoners are gathered in the pit…Then the moon [Allah] will be disgraced and the sun [Mithra] ashamed; For the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem and before His elders, gloriously. (Isaiah 24:17, 18c-23)

When the 200 million-man army from the east (Revelation 16:12) crosses the Euphrates and invades Israel for the Battle of Armageddon, God will protect Israel during this ‘indignation’ [unfair provocation].

“Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment, until the indignation is past. For behold, the Lord comes out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity…” (Isaiah 26:20-21)

He assures Israel that during the Battle of Armageddon, they will not take part, that it will be His arm that accomplishes the victory. This episode from Isaiah even hints that this battle may take place on a Festival and that Israel will have a front-row seat in seeing the Lord’s annihilation of their enemies, as foreseen in the destruction of the Assyrian army included in the ‘nations’ in this passage.

“His breath is like an overflowing stream, which reaches up to the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of futility; and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err. You shall have a song as in the night when a holy festival is kept, and gladness of heart as when one goes with a flute, to come into the mountain of the Lord, to the Mighty One of Israel. The Lord will cause His glorious voice to be heard, and show the descent of His arm, with the indignation of His anger and the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, tempest, and hailstones. For through the voice of the Lord [the invading armies] will be beaten down, as He strikes with the rod. And in every place where the staff of punishment passes, which the Lord lays on [them], it will be with tambourines and harps [for Israel]…” (Isaiah 30:28-32)

Isaiah 60-62 describes the restoration of Israel, Jerusalem, and the Jewish people. Then, the Lord admonishes all non-Jews to join in the celebration.

“Rejoice with Jerusalem,

And be glad with her, all you who love her;

Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn for her;
That you may feed and be satisfied

With the consolation of her bosom,

That you may drink deeply and be delighted

With the abundance of her glory.”

For thus says the Lord:

“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,

And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream.

Then you shall feed;

On her sides shall you be carried,

And be dandled on her knees.

As one whom his mother comforts,

So I will comfort you;

And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”
