The Army of the L-rd

“You are My battle-ax and weapons of war; for with you I will break the nations in pieces; with you I will destroy kingdoms.” (Jeremiah 51:20) (See also Mica 4:11-12, Isaiah 41:15, 16, Zechariah 10:3b)

The prophets of Israel have declared from the very beginning that the L-rd’s intention was to make Israel His army, His instrument of judgment against the nations of the earth. Because G-d chose Israel for this purpose, He gave specific instructions concerning who is able to go to war (Numbers 1:3); thee men had to be at least 20 years old. This gave rise to a tradition in Israel that the great miracle of the Exodus occurred because the population of Israelite men in Egypt over the age of 20 had reached 600,000. Jewish Bible commentaries teach that G-d makes them invincible when they number 600,000. *

“Then the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children…And it came to pass…that all the armies of the L-rd went out from the land of Egypt.”  (Exodus 12:37, 41 & 51)

It is interesting to note that in 1946 a British census of the population of Israel revealed that the total number of [all] Jews had exceeded 600,000 including women and children. Two years later, in 1948, history confirms that 604,000 weaponless Jews were miraculously victorious over a million well-armed Arabs. The Zohar (an ancient Jewish Bible commentary) ties the timing of the rebirth of Israel with the coming of the Messiah:

“Just as the Exodus from Egypt and entry into the Land occurred with 600,000, so will the exact same thing happen again. Right before the era of [Messiah] we’ll inherit the Land and become independent when we number 600,000.” **

Each war that Israel fought against her enemies was fought with Divine intervention. Author Ramon Bennett quotes Charles Gulston’s, Jerusalem: The Tragedy and the Triumph, describing how G-d was at the head of Israel’s army and at the root of Israel’s victory over forces that seemed so much stronger:

“Although the sun did not stand still during the War of Liberation, it is said that the bees fought for Israel when the enemy was approaching Tel Aviv. Swarms of these creatures from the groves east of Petah Tikva, the oldest Jewish agricultural settlement, whose name means ‘door of hope,’ attacked the Arabs; Egyptians surrendered when they believed they were surrounded by a vast army; and sickness immobilized a combined Syrian and Lebanese force in Galilee.”***

To date, though, the greatest move of G-d in His plan of restoration, was the re-taking of Jerusalem from its Arab occupiers in preparation for His return to rule and reign in the earth.

“…therefore thus says the L-rd G-d: ‘Surely I have spoken in My burning jealousy against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, who gave My land to themselves as a possession, with wholehearted joy and spiteful minds, in order to plunder its open country.’” (Ezekiel 36:5)

In the year 5725 (1965), the adult male population of Israel exceeded 600,000, two years before Jerusalem was wrested from Jordan after the Six-day War of 1967. The Zohar predicted that Jerusalem would be returned to the Jews when the L-rd ‘saw’ from heavenly Jerusalem that there were 600,000 adult Israelis below in earthly Jerusalem.

While Israel has been restored as a nation in the natural, their still remains the promise of spiritual restoration by G-d. Ezekiel, in chapter 37, records that after Israel has been restored to the land, then He will pour out His Spirit on them.

“Then He said to me, ‘Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off. Therefore prophesy and say to them ‘Thus says the L-rd G-d: “Behold, O my people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel…I will put my Spirit in you, and you shall live…” (Ezekiel 37: 11-12, 14a).

The apostle Paul reminds us that the natural comes first, then the spiritual, “Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual” (1 Corinthians 15:46). He also states that G-d always deals “with the Jew first” (Romans 2:9-10). In keeping with the pattern and progression G-d established, the next move of G-d should be the spiritual restoration of Israel, when “all Israel will be saved”.

There are many more than 600,000 Jews in the land today. In fact, there are 5,415,000 Jews according to the most recent census. They represent almost as many Jews as were killed in the Holocaust. Of the total number of Jews in Israel today, only 10,000 are born-again, Spirit-filled Messianic Jews. When the Spirit-filled Jews in Israel reach 600,000, it may mark the time that the out-pouring of G-d’s “Spirit on all flesh” will come upon the church.

This is Israel’s 60th year of being back in the land. Pray that the Holy Spirit will be poured out in great measure on the nation of Israel; pray for 60 X 10,000 (600,000) to be swept into the Kingdom of G-d so that G-d will pour out His Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28). Happy Birthday Israel!
