Anti-Zionism, The New Anti-Semitism Print

“Anti-Semitism is a virus that survives by mutating.” – Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

Franklin D. Roosevelt coined the name ‘United Nations’ for the allied countries fighting together against the National Socialist Workers Party (Nazi) and their totalitarian axis powers. Speaking on Justice for War Crimes, March 24, 1944, Roosevelt explained1 that the original goal of the United Nations involved protecting the Jews:

"In one of the blackest crimes of all history - begun by the Nazis...the wholesale systematic murder of the Jews of Europe goes on unabated...Hundreds of thousands of Jews...are now threatened with annihilation as Hitler's forces descend...The United Nations have made it clear that they will pursue the guilty...All who knowingly take part in the deportation of Jews to their death...are equally guilty with the executioner...The United Nations are fighting to make a world in which tyranny and aggression cannot exist."

That goal is a long way from the purposes of today’s United Nations that spends most of its efforts in denigrating Israel. Instead of being an organization that protects Jews, the UN has been hijacked by mostly totalitarian powers that hate Israel and seek its destruction. For example, there have been seventy-seven UN resolutions against Israel from 1955-2013 and only one against ‘Palestine’ despite the unceasing terror attacks by ‘Palestinians’ against Israeli civilians. UN Watch2 exposed this flagrant bias.

“The U.N. General Assembly’s 2015 session adopted 20 resolutions singling out Israel for criticism — and only 3 resolutions on the rest of the world combined, ignoring the gross and systematic abuses committed by China, Cuba, Egypt, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Yemen, Zimbabwe, or on dozens of other perpetrators of gross and systematic human rights violations.”

3The 22 Arab countries surrounding Israel are 640 times larger than that tiny nation, yet Israel is expected to turn over all the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights and half of Jerusalem... territory that the Arabs lost after they started the 1967 war. A reasonable person would certainly ask why there is so much hatred against Jews, a people that represent a miniscule 0.2% of the world’s population and whose nation occupies only 0.0001365% of the world's land.

Today’s anti-Semites do not publicly proclaim their desire to subject the Jews to mass murder or annihilation. Instead, their hatred is aimed at the State of Israel labeling themselves anti-Zionists. 4Anti-Zionism is the mutated form of the ancient virus of anti-Semitism. Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks explains…

“In the Middle Ages, Jews were hated because of their religion. In the 19th and 20th centuries they were hated because of their race. Today they are hated because of their nation state, Israel. Anti-Zionism is the new anti-Semitism.”

According to anti-Zionists, Israel represents all that is evil in the world. They claim that Israel is the main violator of human rights and is guilty of virtually every other abuse that can be conceived. This anti-Zionist venom is now so widespread that a poll taken in Europe not long ago found Israel to be the greatest threat to peace in the world – far ahead of such brutal regimes as those of Iran or of North Korea.

The reason for this hatred goes far beyond any natural explanation that could be fabricated. The reason is, rather, spiritual. The prophets of Israel have declared from the very beginning that the L-rd’s intention is to make Israel His army, His instrument of judgment against the nations of the earth.

“You are My battle-ax and weapons of war; for with you I will break the nations in pieces; with you I will destroy kingdoms.” (Jeremiah 51:20)

The Bible teaches that the Battle of Armageddon, the final war of all wars, will be fought over Jerusalem, the city of G-d. That is why the political situation of the nation of Israel serves as a barometer to measure how close we are to the L-rd’s return.

G-d’s promises stand firm and Satan knows his defeat is getting closer. He desires to destroy all the people he can. One method he uses is to deceive individuals and nations into resisting G-d by opposing the Jews, Israel, and the construction of the Third Temple, which will usher in the [return of] Messiah. G-d is engaged in a fixed plan to accomplish the restoration of mankind, which will consequently bring about the destruction of all of G-d’s enemies, those who do not obey the Word of G-d, although He longs to see all mankind saved.

“The L-rd is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

The Scriptures reveal that His plan would be accomplished in five final steps:

1st -The re-gathering of the Jewish people from exile to the former Land of Israel

The period between 1840-1850 was a major turning point in history when Jews became the majority population in Jerusalem following a wave of Jewish immigration that began in the latter 1700’s.

"Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your descendants from the east, and gather you from the west; I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' and to the south, 'Do not keep them back!' Bring My sons from afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth." (Isaiah 43:5, 6)

2nd - The re-establishment of the Nation of Israel (accomplished on May 14, 1948)

“Who has ever heard of such a thing? And who ever sees such things? Can a country be born in a single day, or can a nation be brought forth in a single moment? Yet no sooner was Zion in labor than she delivered her children.” (Isaiah 66:8 – ISV)

3rd – The control of the City of Jerusalem restored to Israel (restored during the 1967 Six-day War)

"Yet I have chosen Jerusalem, that My name may be there…" (2 Chronicles 6:6)

4th – The control of the Temple Mount restored to Israel (yet to be done)

“Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the L-rd’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and peoples shall flow to it.” (Micah 4:1)

5th – The construction of the Temple of G-d (yet to be done)

"And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell [in] them." (Exodus 25:8)

The first three steps were accomplished through great strife as Satan vehemently sought, through anti-Semitism, to prevent these major events. But once Israel was firmly established, Satan had to change his tactics to thwart the rebuilding of the Temple prior to His coming. Instead of focusing mainly on anti-Semitism (individual Jews), Satan seeks to deceive the world into also opposing the Nation of Israel – anti-Zionism.

In 1967, the devil stirred up the Arab inhabitants of Israel and influenced them to establish a ‘Palestinian’ identity, claiming to have ‘always’ been there even though they had actually come from almost 50 different nations. And, in order to prevent the construction of G-d’s Temple, they have attempted to alter the history of the Land, claiming that there was never a Temple built on the Temple Mount.

While the world is being deceived into believing the lies of Satan, G-d moves steadily forth in His plan of restoration.

“…many nations have gathered against you…But they do not know the thoughts of the L-rd, nor do they understand His counsel; for He will gather them like sheaves to the threshing floor. Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion; for I will make your horn iron, and I will make your hooves bronze; you shall beat in pieces many peoples…” (Micah 4:11-12)

The Hebrew sages believe that Haggai’s prophecy (2:7, 9) reveals that the Third Temple of G-d is the key to true peace. It is the reason Israel must rebuild; and the reason, they say, that the enemies of Israel will try to prevent it. For in the final battle against Jerusalem, the prophet Zechariah says that all nations will come to wage war against Jerusalem. But Zechariah warns that he who fights against Israel will find himself fighting against G-d Himself (Zechariah 2:8).

"....I am G-d and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure'...Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it....My salvation shall not linger. And I will place salvation in Zion, for Israel My glory." (Isaiah 46:9c-13 portions)

4. Zionism was a movement for the re-establishment and (now) the development and protection of a Jewish nation in what is now Israel. It was established as a political organization in 1897 under Theodor Herzl, and was later led by Chaim Weizmann. Anti-Zionism represents those who are opposed to the existence of Israel.
